Is shellac in foods allowed?
Food substances with shellac in them are permissible to consume. Let me explain why. Shellac comes from the lac glands from the lac beetle. Very important to distinguish. We're not talking about eating a beetle in and of itself. We're talking about something that is produced from its glands, a liquid. Very similar to how you have other insects that produce other things. Let's say bees, for example, produce honey. Now, even if we were to say there were parts of the beetle that were present in shellac, any liquid form of an insect, if the insect has no flowing blood in it, would still be pure. It wouldn't make the overall food substance impure. Here, we're not even talking about that because we're not talking about any insect parts, any beetle parts. That's already been filtered out. We're talking about the pure liquid that has been taken out from the glands. So because of that, it is pure and it is permissible to consume. So food substances with shellac in them are permissible to consume.
