Can we combine Shawal fasts and fasts that we have missed?
There are a few views on this, follow this with me. The first one is that it's permissible. A number of scholars may say that it's preferable to actually not combine and may even be disliked to combine, but it would still be valid if you were to fast your missed Ramadan fasts and also have a secondary intention of it being the six days of Shawwal. The Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) said, "Whoever fasts Ramadan and then does the sixth of Shawwal, it's as if you fasted the entire year." Now, Aisha famously was narrated to have only made up her missed fasts towards the end of the year prior to next year's Ramadan, and it would have been known that she would have done the six fasts of Shawwal because she was amongst the Sahabah, those who were the greatest in terms of their ibadah. So that's one reason. A second view is the view of the Hanbali method, which says no, you have to do your Ramadan fasts first, and this is what you'll often find on various websites, why? Because the Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) said the hadith, "Whoever fasts Ramadan and then makes up the six days of Shawwal," meaning you have to fast Ramadan first.
