The majority of scholars permit combining the intention for a missed Ramadan fast with the intention for a Shawwal fast, while the Hanbali school requires completing missed Ramadan fasts first. fasting, shawwal, ramadan, intention, makeup, scholars https://www.youtube.com/shorts/3P9Z6FNCksU
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said in Sahih Muslim, مَنْ صَامَ رَمَضَانَ ثُمَّ أَتْبَعَهُ سِتًّا مِنْ شَوَّالٍ Then you fast six days in Shawwal, كَانَ كَصِيَامِ الدَّهْرِ You will have the reward of the entire year. Now, with regards to this, according to the majority of scholars, you can do your six days of Shawwal before you make up your Ramadan fast, and you can actually combine the intentions. So you would have your intention of making up a Ramadan fast, but also the intention of it being a Shawwal fast, and you could even add a third intention of it being a Monday or Thursday, if you fast on a Monday or Thursday. So therefore, you could get three rewards just for one day fasting. In the Hanbali Madhab, however, specifically it mentions that you need to do your Ramadan fast first, and then the Shawwal fast. That's in the Hanbali Madhab, but according to the majority of scholars, you could do your Shawwal first and combine the intention as well.
