Is it allowed to paint humans or animals on canvases for interiors?
The image makers will be in Jahannam, this is what the Prophet said in a hadith in Sahih Bukhari and then he further expanded in various other hadith that it's because you are imitating the creation of Allah. Now, how do we understand this with regards to portraits? If you are doing a full, you know, from head to toe image of somebody else, that would not be allowed. So if you're doing the full details, hair, eyes, you know, face, nose, mouth the exact copying, the exact image of somebody else, that would not be allowed. However, there are certain exceptions. Now, the exceptions being, this is where scholars differ. Some say if you don't have the eyes, some say if you don't have various other parts. Others say, for example, if there are parts of the body that are removed meaning if the image were to be alive, it would not survive. So, for example, if you were to have a headless body or if you were to have a face which has no eyes, ears or mouth, for example then that would be permissible. So there are certain exceptions such as this but the general principle of full portrait Portrait will not be allowed.
