Parenting tip from the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam: One thing he would do is he would often ask children questions. So for example, and not just children but also adults as well. He would say, 'manil muflis', the hadith in Sahih Bukhari: 'Who is the bankrupt person?' Why? Because he wants to gain their understanding. What is it that their baseline knowledge is? And then he would correct it or he would affirm it. But first of all, he wanted to understand their thoughts, their mindset, their kind of thought process that they had. Because children are often affected by many things that maybe we weren't affected by in our lives when we were younger: the societal pressure that they have, screens, billboards and so on. So it's really important you try and understand the baseline of what your child's knowledge is. A simple example, you can say to them: 'Okay, Allah tells us that we have angels that are with us. How many angels do you think we have?' And then they may say the correct answer or the wrong answer. Then you can then build on this: 'Okay, there's an angel on the right side, an angel on the left side. They write down everything that we say.' So it's really important that if we have nothing good to say then we should keep silent.
