Can you explain the camel hump hijab hadith and whether it applies now?
The Prophet said there will come a time, the hadith in Sahih Muslim, where people will be clothed yet naked, they will disobey Allah and encourage others to disobey Allah, and also that they will have their heads like camel humps. Now, what does this hadith mean? First of all, clothed yet naked, a number of scholars say that it means that they're wearing transparent clothing. I mean, you can see, you know, what's underneath their clothing. In terms of the head part, some scholars, such as Imam Malawi, who has the most famous explanation of Sahih Muslim, says that it means like attaching a turban or extra clothing to the hijab. Other scholars then differ. Is it the top of the head that has this extra kind of volumized aspect, or is it the side? What's interesting is none of the scholars say that this particular hijab style, if you like, is specifically haram. A number of scholars say that it refers to individuals who have all of the characteristics mentioned in the hadith, meaning transparent clothing, they disobey Allah, encourage others to disobey Allah, and so on. In Imam Malawi, we actually see that this characteristic of these people happened in the 7th century, so I hope that explains this particular hadith.
