What is the ruling on putting flowers or garden lights on graves in the UK according to the Hanafi school?
So there is a difference of opinion on this, let me explain. In the Hanafi Madhab, it is permissible, based on a hadith in the Prophet ﷺ, said, collected by Imam Bukhari and Imam Muslim, he passed by two graves one day and he said, 'Innahumma la yu'adhiban', that these two people in the graves are being punished. So the Prophet ﷺ, he took a palm branch, he broke it in two and he planted one on each of the graves and he said that perhaps this will be able to help them as a form of intercession until the palm branches are essentially dry, meaning they're no longer alive. So based on this, a number of scholars say that you could plant, for example, plant something on top of the grave and it would also help the person that is deceased. Other scholars say no, this was specific to the Prophet ﷺ, so that's not something that we can or we would then have the same ability for it to affect the deceased. So that's why there are two views. But in the Hanafi Madhab specifically, it would be permissible.
