Family & Marriage
Are we allowed to show our potential naseeb our hair to see if they find us attractive?
So this happened at the time of the Prophet, the hadith collected by al-Bayhaqi. One of the companions came to him and said, "I'm going to get married." The Prophet said, "Have you looked at her?" And he said, "No." So the Prophet said, "Go back and look at her. See what she looks like to make sure you're physically attracted." Now when the Prophet said, "Go back and look at her," what did he mean when he said, "Look at her?" So this is where the scholars differ. So in the Hanbali Madhab, for example, they say it's the hands, the face, and the feet you're allowed to see. In the Hanbali Madhab specifically, though, they would say it's anything in terms of how she would normally dress in her home. Meaning you'd be able to see her hair because she wouldn't, for example, be wearing hijab in her home. And that's what they understand the hadith to be. So it is a valid view that you could ask for your potential spouse to see their hair. The potential female spouse does not have to oblige. She doesn't have to oblige. But it would be valid in the Hanbali Madhhab, but it's not the majority view.
